December 2016: Jocelyn Leung

For the month of December, we would like to recognize a second-year student from the University of Waterloo (UW) School of Optometry and Vision Science, Jocelyn Leung. She is actively involved with the school as class president for the Class of 2019 and Vice President of Finance-Elect for Private Practice Club (University of Waterloo Advancement of Independent Optometry Club). She is a natural leader and strong advocate of living a balanced, diverse and healthy lifestyle!

Since Grade 9, Jocelyn knew she wanted to study optometry based on her experiences with her optometrist. Throughout high school, Jocelyn worked at a clinic that really affirmed her passion for the profession- she hopes to be as passionate and patient-centric as the optometrists she has worked with! She spent her undergrad at UW where she was involved with the UW Pre-Optometry club, Fashion for Change (annual charity fashion show), varsity cheerleading and varsity ultimate Frisbee! Moreover, she is passionate about powerlifting and is hoping to compete soon. If she’s not studying in the library, you can find her at the gym!

Jocelyn has worked in a clinic for 5 years and volunteered with optometrists in long-term care facilities. Through the Faculty of Science, she’s organized the Optometry Booth at the University of Waterloo Science Open House where they facilitated hands-on science demonstrations for school-aged children in the community. She has also promoted the OAO’s Eye See… Eye Learn program at the “PeeWee Picnic” held at North York General Hospital. This program educates parents about eye exams for children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Moreover, this summer, she volunteered with St. Michael’s family clinic where they identified urgent eye conditions in Syrian refugees.

Through optometry, Jocelyn is interested in learning more about contact lenses and dry eye. She wants to spread community awareness that optometry is more than just writing a prescription for glasses- it’s a profession focused on eye health too! In the future, Jocelyn hopes to open and manage her own practice, while maintaining a work-life balance! And on that note, Jocelyn wanted to use this nomination to remind students about the importance of mental health as exams approach. Don’t forget to take breaks from studying!
