Kyle Kassian is currently a fourth year student at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in Florida. He was born and raised on a farm in Two Hills, a small town located near Edmonton, Alberta. Kyle graduated High School at the top of his class in 2010 then attended Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. Kyle knew he wanted a profession where he could make a difference in people’s lives and this paired perfectly with his passion for learning about the visual system that started in grade 10 and still continues to this day.
After three years of undergraduate studies he was accepted into optometry school, where he has excelled academically while maintaining his active lifestyle. Kyle was an avid hockey player growing up, however being in Florida has provided him the opportunity to play indoor/outdoor volleyball and take part in both a Tough Mudder and Battlefrog competition.
Kyle’s determination and enthusiasm are qualities that guided his academic career. This dedication led him to be part of the Chancellor’s List during the first two years of his time at Nova, and he achieved passing honors at both of his external rotation sites, has remained a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honour Society since his second year and was Co-Prime Minister of the CAOS club in the 2015/2016 school year. Kyle enjoys participating in community events and has volunteered at the The Special Olympics in Orlando, Florida where at each separate event helped approximately 350 athletes and participating in several school screenings in villages while on his external rotation in Alaska. Another memorable opportunity was his external rotation in Bethel, Alaska where there was a high prevalence of narrow angle glaucoma and trauma cases.
He is eager to graduate the program in May, 2017, and settle in Edmonton with his wife where he will provide excellent optometric care to Albertan’s. Kyle plans on working as an associate at a private practice to learn the business aspect of running a practice. His goal is to open his own private practice within five years that provides primary care for all ages, posterior disease management and specialty contact lenses.
