October 2017: Angela Zhang

Angela Zhang is a second-year optometry student at the University of Waterloo (UW) School of Optometry and Vision Science. Many of her classmates and peers would agree that she always has a warm smile on her face and always willing to help others. Angela is currently the vice-president for her class of 2020 and served as a sponsorship coordinator for the orientation week held for the class of 2021. She has also contributed to research in various areas of vision science and perception. Furthermore, she is currently an active member of CAOS and UW Advancement of Independent Optometry Club.

Angela is from British Columbia, where she attended the University of British Columbia (UBC) to study psychology, microbiology and immunology with co-op. During her undergraduate studies, she was an active member of many clubs including the pre-optometry club where her interest in optometry began. Her interest in vision care grew after doing research at the UBC Vision Lab, where she studied how our sense of touch and sight are integrated. Furthermore, she worked on several ophthalmology studies on amblyopia, strabismus and dyslexia at the Children’s Hospital in BC. These research studies showed her the importance of eye sight in everyday tasks and further inspired her to pursue optometry and become a contributing member of this great profession.

This past summer, Angela worked with Dr. Ben Thompson, an associate professor and an associate director for research, at UW School of Optometry to study a method to assess one’s level of suppression in amblyopia with eye movements. Her research aims to better understand how amblyopia treatments improve vision. After graduation, Angela plans to return to BC to establish her own binocular vision-focussed clinic while remaining academically involved in vision science to further enhance the field of Optometry. In Angela’s spare time, she enjoys cycling, pet sitting and singing. She was a section leader in UBC Women’s Choir. She took her music talent to Waterloo-Kitchener, where she sings with the Da Capo Chamber Choir and a UW acapella group called the Unaccompanied Minors.
