UW Mentorship: Dr. Eltis

Through the CAOS Mentorship Program we had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Mark Eltis, one of the staff optometrists on the team at View Eye Care in downtown Toronto. Our visit first began over lunch with Dr. Eltis, followed by a tour of View Eye Care before shadowing him for his first patients that afternoon.

Dr. Eltis has an undeniable passion for optometry and his wide breadth of experience, both Canada and the United States, are a testament to that. In addition to his role in private practice, Dr. Eltis is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and is extensively involved in academia, with a specific interest in the care of patients with glaucoma. Furthermore, he has served as an examiner for the national optometry board exams in both Canada and the United States. We’re grateful to have been able to get fresh insights from such an experienced optometrist on a wide variety of topics!

Practicing in downtown Toronto presents unique challenges and the staff at View Eye Care seem to be effortlessly navigating through the competitive environment. Using state-of-the-art equipment (i.e., swept source OCT), Dr. Eltis is ceaselessly committed to a patient-centered approach to optometry. He spoke of the benefits of also differentiating oneself as a practitioner, whether that involves carrying out research, becoming a Fellow or completing a residency in optometry for further specialization. Needless to say, we learned a ton through our afternoon meeting at View Eye Care and it was inspiring to have an excellent optometrist like Dr. Mark Eltis as our mentor.
