UW Mentorship: Dr. YanLing Liang

Written by Brittany Lau (2nd year)

Through the CAOS Mentorship Program, I had the pleasure to meet and connect with Dr. YanLing Liang at Warden Optometry in Markham, ON. Dr. Liang is the owner of Warden Optometry which offers many optometric services and specializes in vision therapy and myopia control.

Dr. Liang was happy to answer all my questions and gave a tour of her office. She was very approachable and introduced me to her staff and patients. The office has equipment for myopia control such as the corneal topographer and a room dedicated for her vision therapy patients. I had the opportunity to hear her journey in specializing in vision therapy after seeing a patient with strabismus. She also shared her journey in opening her own clinic. Dr. Liang gave lots of insight about the field of vision therapy and how it is growing as she also works with concussion patients. She provided lots of advice about starting your own business and how to specialize in a field of optometry, especially vision therapy. She even quizzed me in certain conditions to push me as an optometry student. I had the opportunity to also talk to the vision therapist and ask him questions about the field which he happily answered.

I am thankful for this opportunity to shadow Dr. Liang and I gained lots of insight from our conversations. Thank you, Dr. Liang, for taking the time to teach and mentor me!
