CAOS has the pleasure of selecting Éric Lortie-Milner as October’s student doctor of the month, for his contributions to the optometry program at l’Université de Montréal. This student has shown himself to be helpful and approachable to classmates, and his dedication to the profession goes far beyond his academic performance.
He has served as AOSA trustee for the past two years, and through his role has attended numerous academic optometry conferences. Since Éric started as trustee, the amount of AOSA members at UdeM has increased exponentially through his efforts to make informative and interesting sessions on the benefits of membership, starting at the beginning of each school year. After his term, he continued to contribute to the organisation by joining the executive committee responsible for organising student events at Optometry’s Meeting, which students from all over the US and Canada attend every year.
Not only is he constantly improving his own skills in optometry, but he also contributes to the field in general through his research projects. He has collaborated with Dr. Jean-François Bouchard on investigations in neuro pharmacology. He has also recently worked on finding new tools for diagnosing dry eye disease, and will be presenting his findings at the American Academy of Optometry conference in Anaheim this November.
This student doctor of optometry makes sure he stays involved in all aspects of optometry school, by attending numerous social events and sharing his other talents as well. He has been a part of the singing group Les Chantres Musiciens for the past ten years, which will often perform as a quartet at a number of optometry events throughout the year. They put on a remarkable performance at the Optoshow, an event that raises funds for different charities from year to year. Éric has also personally given back by taking part in a VOSH trip to Romania last summer, in order to provide free eye exams and glasses to people in need.
Now as a 4th year student, he is acting as president of l’Association des Étudiants de l’Université de Montréal (AÉOUM). He is a person who whole-heartedly embraces all aspects of student life, and hopes to make it accessible to all students through events and conferences that foster professional development in optometry. He will continue to work on projects with the goal of promoting optometry to the public as well. We would like to wish Éric all the best in his future endeavours, and thank him for his efforts.
Pour le mois d’octobre, l’ACÉO désire nominer Éric Lortie-Milner pour ses contributions au programme d’optométrie à l’Université de Montréal. Ce collègue apprécié de tous est une personne ressource , accessible, et dont l’implication dépasse le milieu scolaire.
Il a été fiduciaire pour l’AOSA (American Optometric Student Association) durant deux ans, ce qui l’a mené à participer à plusieurs congrès dans le domaine scientifique. Il a fait augmenter l’adhésion des étudiants de l’Université de Montréal à l’association de façon fulgurante en donnant une séance informative et intéressante en début d’année scolaire. Après son mandat, il a continué à donner son temps et son énergie à cette association en siégeant sur le comité étudiant, dont le rôle est d’organiser l’Optometry’s Meeting qui rassemble des étudiants de partout aux États-Unis et au Canada chaque anneé.
En plus de continuellement parfaire ses connaissances en optométrie, il contribue au développement de la profession avec des projets de recherche. D’abord, il a collaboré avec Dr. Jean-François Bouchard sur un projet touchant la neuro pharmacologie. Puis, pour son projet final, il se concentre sur un outil diagnostique pour la sécheresse oculaire dont il présentera les résultats à l’académie (AAO) à Anaheim en novembre prochain.
Le futur optométriste étale ses intérêts hors de l’école en étant toujours présent lors des événements et en partageant ses talents. En effet, il fait partie d’un groupe de chanteurs, les Chantres Musiciens, depuis une dizaine d’années. Certains membres du groupe se joignent à lui pour réchauffer l’ambiance à diverses occasions en formant un quartet. Entre autres, ils ont fait une performance remarquable lors de l’optoshow, un événement qui vise à amasser des fonds pour différents organismes charitables selon l’année. Il a également fait un don de soi en participant à un voyage humanitaire en Roumanie afin de faire des examens de vue et d’offrir des lunettes adaptées aux personnes dans le besoin.
Maintenant en 4e année du doctorat, il est président de l’Association des Étudiants de l’Université de Montréal (AÉOUM). Il a à cœur la vie étudiante et la facilité d’accès à divers événements-conférences dans le but d’améliorer la formation de ses collègues. Il continuera à travailler sur un projet cherchant à promouvoir l’optométrie auprès du public. Nous souhaitons donc à Éric une excellente continuité et le remercions de son implication.
